For Couples Getting Married

Pre-Marriage Counseling

You have talked about the wedding a hundred times. The venue, the guest list, the budget. Pre-marriage counseling is where you talk about the marriage underneath it, before the date arrives.

Why This Matters Now

Engagement Is the Best Time to Build What the Marriage Needs.

You and your partner have probably covered every wedding detail by now. There are a few things you may not have covered. How you will handle the first real disagreement about money, now that you actually share it. What happens the first time you disagree about family. Whether married life matches what either of you has actually pictured.

Pre-marriage counseling at Colorado Women's Center gives you a structured place to have those conversations before the wedding, not after a problem forces them. Your therapist helps you build the habits, communication, conflict, and the practical stuff, that the wedding planning itself never covers.

What It Helps With

What This Actually Works On.

None of this requires a problem to already exist. Most couples come in simply wanting to start married life on solid ground.

Improved Communication

You and your partner learn to disagree without it turning into a bigger fight.

Conflict Resolution Skills

Small disagreements get handled now, before they turn into old resentments.

Deeper Intimacy

You build a connection that holds up once the wedding excitement fades.

Shared Vision & Goals

Money, family, and where you want to end up. You get specific instead of assuming you already agree.

Reduction of Pre-Wedding Stress

The planning stress stops leaking into how you treat each other.

Effective Boundary-Setting

You figure out together how to handle family opinions, both about the wedding and about the marriage after it.

Enhanced Self-Awareness

You each get clearer on what you bring into an argument, not just what your partner brings.

Prevention of Larger Issues

The doubt or the red flag you have been talking yourselves out of gets a real conversation instead.

Our Approach

Starting Pre-Marriage Counseling.

This is not marriage-repair work. It is building the foundation before you need it.

01

The Match Call Comes First

You and your partner talk with a Wellness Coordinator about what you’re looking for. She matches you with a therapist who works with couples preparing for marriage.

02

The Gottman Method

Your therapist may draw on the Gottman Method. It focuses on the habits that predict whether a marriage holds up, not just the disagreement in front of you right now.

03

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT works on the emotional bond underneath the logistics. You are building a secure attachment, not just a shared calendar.

04

Before the Wedding, Not After

Most couples start within about a week of reaching out. Sessions are available at our Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins, Broomfield, or Longmont offices, or online anywhere in Colorado, seven days a week.

Common Questions

Questions About Pre-Marriage Counseling.

How many sessions do we need?

That depends on what you are working on. Some couples cover what they need in four to six sessions. Others use eight to ten, especially when working through something specific.

Can this help if we already disagree about money or family?

Yes, that is exactly the kind of thing this is for. Your therapist helps you get specific about what each of you actually wants, instead of assuming you already agree.

Do we both need to be at every session?

Most sessions work best with both of you there. Individual sessions can be arranged too, if one of you needs space to work through something on your own first.

What if there is something we are nervous to bring up?

You do not have to share everything in the first session. Your therapist paces the conversation with you, and you bring up what you are ready to when you are ready to.

How soon can we start, with the wedding coming up?

Usually within about a week. Match Calls are usually available within 48 hours and often within 24. Call 720.810.2355 or use the form on this page to set one up.

How is this different from regular couples therapy?

The focus is different. This is about building the foundation before problems show up, not repairing something that is already strained. If you are already married and want ongoing support, see couples and marriage therapy.
