"You Don't Have to Keep Carrying This"
EMDR Therapy in Colorado

If the past still shows up uninvited — in your body, your reactions, your sleepless nights — you’re not broken. You’re carrying something that hasn’t had a chance to heal. EMDR can help.

Is EMDR Right for Me?

You might be here because talk therapy helped, but only to a point. Or because you’re tired of understanding why you feel this way but still feeling it anyway. Or because someone mentioned EMDR and you’re curious whether it could work for you.

EMDR is often a good fit if you:

  • Feel triggered by things that “shouldn’t” bother you anymore
  • Notice your body reacting before your mind catches up
  • Have memories that still feel raw, even years later
  • Feel stuck in patterns you can’t think your way out of
  • Want to process past experiences without reliving every detail

You don’t need a trauma diagnosis. You don’t need to have “been through something big.” If something from your past is affecting how you feel today, EMDR might help.

What EMDR Actually Does

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. But the name doesn’t capture what it actually feels like.

Here’s what happens: Your brain already knows how to heal. When you cut your finger, your body closes the wound. EMDR works similarly. I helps your brain process experiences that got “stuck” before they could fully heal.

During EMDR, you’ll focus briefly on a memory while your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation, often eye movements, taps, or tones. This helps your brain reprocess the experience so it feels less intense, less present, less in control of your reactions.

You won’t have to tell your whole story. You won’t have to relive the worst moments. You stay in the driver’s seat.

Most clients describe the shift as: “The memory is still there, but it doesn’t have the same charge. It feels like something that happened, not something that’s still happening.”

3 Steps to Doing EMDR with Us

Step 1: Match

Tell us what you’re facing and what you want in a therapist. We guarantee your therapist match.

Step 2: Meet

Your first session focuses on comfort, goals, and tools you can use between visits. We go slowly and build coping skills first.

Step 3: Move Forward

EMDR at your pace, with a plan tailored to your life.

What to Expect & Timing

Session length Typically 50 minutes, though some clients benefit from extended sessions during active EMDR processing.

Frequency and duration Varies based on your needs. Many clients combine EMDR with other approaches. Your therapist will create a personalized plan and revisit it with you regularly.

Pacing EMDR can feel emotionally activating at times. We build grounding tools first so you have support in and between sessions. You always control the pace.

Online EMDR Works well for many clients using adapted tools like tapping or tones instead of eye movements. Your therapist will help you find what works best.

You don’t have to keep reliving what happened or white-knuckling through your week. There’s a steadier way forward.

How EMDR Therapy Can Help

EMDR helps women process experiences that talk therapy alone can’t always reach.

Trauma and PTSD

Whether from a single event or years of difficult experiences, EMDR helps your brain process what happened so it stops intruding on your present.

Anxiety That Won't Quiet Down

When anxiety lives in your body — the racing heart, the tight chest, the dread you can’t explain — EMDR can help calm the nervous system responses that keep it running.

Panic Attacks

EMDR addresses the root experiences that trigger panic, helping reduce the intensity and frequency of attacks over time.

Painful Memories

Memories that still sting years later often haven’t fully processed. EMDR helps your brain file them properly so they lose their emotional charge.

Childhood Experiences

Early experiences shape how we see ourselves and the world. EMDR can help reprocess old wounds that still affect your relationships, self-worth, and choices today.

Grief and Loss

When grief feels stuck — complicated by guilt, regret, or unresolved moments — EMDR can help you move through it without getting trapped in it.

Phobias and Fears

Intense fears often trace back to specific experiences. EMDR helps desensitize the memory so the fear response softens.

Negative Self-Beliefs

“I’m not good enough.” “It was my fault.” “I can’t trust anyone.” EMDR helps rewire the experiences that created these beliefs so they no longer feel like facts.

What Success Looks Like

“I used to flinch every time I heard a car door slam. After EMDR, I noticed one day that I didn’t. The memory is still there, but it doesn’t control my body anymore.” — CWC Client

Our EMDR Approach

  • You won’t be thrown into the deep end. We spend time building safety first by getting to know each other, developing coping tools, and making sure you feel grounded before we begin processing.
  • When we do start EMDR, you stay in control. You can pause, slow down, or stop at any time. Your Colorado Women’s Center therapist is there to guide you, not push you.
  • Many clients feel a shift within a few sessions. Others need more time. It’s your timeline.

EMDR FAQs

Q: Does EMDR work online?
A: Yes. Many clients do EMDR through secure video using tapping or tones instead of eye movements. Research supports online EMDR as effective, and your therapist will help you find what works best for you.
A: No. EMDR doesn’t require you to share every detail of your experience. You stay in control of what you disclose, and your therapist will never push you to share more than you’re comfortable with.
A: Talk therapy helps you understand your experiences. EMDR helps your brain reprocess them, so you’re not just talking about the past, you’re changing your relationship to it. Many clients do both.
A: It varies. Some clients feel significant relief in 6-12 sessions. Others with more complex histories may benefit from longer-term work. Your therapist will create a plan with you and adjust it as you go.
A: That’s okay. Your Match Call is a chance to talk through your options with one of our Wellness Coordinators. If EMDR isn’t the best fit, we’ll recommend an approach that is.
