Trauma & PTSD Therapy for Women

Trauma Therapy in Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins, Broomfield and Longmont

Therapy for traumatic events that haunt you

We help many women process traumatic events. In fact, most of us at some point in our lives will encounter some from of trauma. Trauma can be defined as either “Big T” or “Little T.” Therefore, PTSD can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed either “big” or “little” traumas. “Big” traumas include such experiences as natural disasters, serious accidents, sudden deaths of loved ones, violence and personal assault in adulthood or childhood, or other life-threatening events. “Small” traumas include divorce, job loss, an abrupt move, financial difficulties, and any overwhelming life difficulties. Regardless of what propels us into the fight, flight, or freeze mode, any experience that exceeds our capacity to cope can be stored as trauma.

We work with women and trauma every day

Are you having flashbacks of the experience? Are you hyper-vigilant to certain triggers? Do you suddenly disassociate? If so, you could be experiencing Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a serious condition affecting 7.7 million Americans age 18 and older. Women are particularly vulnerable and are twice as likely as men to develop Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Trauma is a part of life, and while it varies in severity, most survivors of trauma are able to recover and return to normal functioning within time. However, we also know that others will continue to experience stress reactions that do not go away on their own and may even worsen. These people may have developed Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Do you have these trauma symptoms?

A traumatic event can often be too much to process. And, without sufficient processing, the event gets stored away with all of the unpleasant sensations that accompany it. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder can be treated with psychotherapy. Early treatment is important as it may help reduce long-term symptoms.

Intrusive Memories

Unwanted memories, thoughts, or images related to past trauma may surface suddenly and feel overwhelming or out of your control.

Avoidance

You may find yourself avoiding people, places, conversations, or situations that remind you of a traumatic experience.

Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood

Trauma can shift how you see yourself, others, and the world, often leading to persistent guilt, shame, numbness, or hopelessness.

Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions

Your body may stay on high alert, causing irritability, tension, difficulty sleeping, or strong emotional responses that feel hard to regulate.

Relationship Issues

Trauma can make it difficult to feel safe, connected, or understood in relationships, leading to withdrawal, conflict, or trust challenges.

Night Terrors

Disturbing dreams or sudden awakenings can interrupt sleep and leave you feeling anxious or exhausted during the day.

Flashbacks

You may feel as though you are reliving the traumatic event, with intense emotional or physical sensations that make the past feel present.

Arousal/Reactivity

Heightened startle responses, hypervigilance, or constant alertness can make it hard to relax or feel safe in everyday life.
