You may have questions about domestic violence therapy. Our team of wellness coordinators and therapists are prepared to help you. Here are some of the most common questions we are asked:
Q: How is domestic violence therapy at CWC different from general therapy?
A: At Colorado Women’s Center, our therapists are specially trained in trauma-informed care and understand the unique gender-based dynamics of intimate partner violence. We incorporate evidence-based modalities—like EMDR and trauma-focused CBT—that specifically address the effects of abuse.
Q: Will I have to discuss my experiences in detail right away?
A: No. We honor your pacing and readiness. Your therapist will focus on establishing safety, trust, and coping skills first. You decide how much or how little to share in each session.
Q: How long will therapy take?
A: Every survivor’s journey is different. Some clients find relief in a few months; others benefit from ongoing support for a year or longer. Together, we set goals and regularly review progress to ensure therapy remains aligned with your needs.
Q: What if I’m still living with my abuser? Can I still seek therapy?
A: Yes. If you are not yet ready—or able—to leave your situation, therapy can help you develop safety strategies, identify resources, and build resilience until you feel ready to take action. Our clinicians respect your choices and provide nonjudgmental support.
Q: How confidential is therapy at Colorado Women’s Center?
A: Our confidential services are protected by HIPAA and state laws. We will never share details of your sessions without your explicit consent, except if there is an imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, as mandated by law.
Q: Do you assist with legal or protective orders?
A: While CWC does not provide legal services directly, our clinicians can guide you to trusted community partners—legal advocates, law enforcement liaisons, and pro bono attorneys—who specialize in protective orders and family law.
