What is EMDR Therapy

The therapists at Colorado Women’s Center in Broomfield use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy as a form of treatment that focuses on healing the symptoms and distress from traumatic experiences.

EMDR is a type of psychotherapy that is used to relieve psychological stress that is a result of disturbing life experiences. It is an effective treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which often occurs after experiences such as physical assault, sexual assault, rape, car accidents and military combat.

The methodology was initially created to treat trauma, however it is also used to treat a variety of mental health conditions such as: Anxiety, Chronic pain, Depression, Panic attacks, Panic disorder, Phobias, PTSD and Self-esteem issues. EMDR can be used on its own or together with other psychotherapy techniques and medications.

In an EMDR session the client will focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the intensity and emotion associated with the trauma memories.

EMDR allows the client to be exposed to the memories without having a strong psychological response as recalling distressing events is often less emotionally upsetting when attention is placed elsewhere.

At Colorado Women’s Center, we have found EMDR therapy to be very successful in helping our clients with trauma. Much like the body wants to heal from physical trauma, the mind wants to heal from psychological trauma. The key is to remove the barriers to this healing.

EMDR Therapy Process Explained

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a proven approach to help individuals recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to what you can expect from the EMDR therapy process at Colorado Women’s Center in Broomfield:

  1. History and Treatment Planning: The first step involves understanding your personal history and identifying specific memories to target with EMDR therapy. This phase helps tailor the treatment to your unique needs.
  2. Preparation: Your therapist will introduce you to the EMDR process, teach you stress-reduction techniques, and ensure you feel comfortable and safe before proceeding.
  3. Assessment: Together, you and your therapist will identify the vivid visual image related to the memory, negative beliefs about yourself, and the emotions and body sensations linked to this memory. You’ll also establish a positive belief.
  4. Desensitization: While focusing on the memory, your therapist will guide you through specific eye movements or other bilateral stimulation. This phase helps reduce the emotional impact of the memory.
  5. Installation: The positive belief identified in the assessment phase is strengthened and associated with the targeted memory, promoting positive thought patterns.
  6. Body Scan: After desensitization, your therapist will ask you to think of the original memory while observing any residual physical sensations. Any lingering distress is targeted for further processing.
  7. Closure: This ensures you leave each session feeling better than when you started, employing techniques to manage any residual emotions or stress.
  8. Reevaluation: At the beginning of subsequent sessions, your therapist will check on your progress and determine if the targeted memory has been successfully processed, ensuring the effectiveness of the therapy.

EMDR therapy is designed to alleviate the emotional distress from difficult memories, fostering healing and growth.

Our trained therapists are here to guide you through each step, ensuring a safe and supportive journey towards recovery.
